Roy Moore, like the comparably repugnant Milo Yiannopoulos, has learned that enough people who are not offended by the desire to go back to the good old days before the New Deal and the 13th Amendment are repelled by sex with teenagers to make a difference. It would be churlish to point out that many of these people are willing to treat children far below the sexual age of consent as adults if they are accused of a sufficiently offensive crime, that two teens who are caught experimenting will be accused of molesting one another and perhaps forced to register as sexual predators for the rest of their lives, and that many of these voters are significantly less concerned with children not having enough to eat or a roof over their heads. Nevertheless, I have done so.

In 2008 the Democrats did a brave thing (like many brave things, it was done because they had no choice): They wrote off the millions of American voters for whom Barack Obama is the wrong color to be president, and they won anyway.

In 2016 they made a similar gamble: In the eyes of a comparable number of voters Hillary Clinton lacks essential equipment for any responsible job, and just to be on the safe side, they voted for someone who not only has one but is one. Together with voter suppression and FBI & Russian meddling, that cost them the election. Bernie might have won enough more votes in the swing states, but the difference would have been less political than anatomical.

44% of White Evangelicals Claim Trump Has Strong Moral Character. Since these are the people who believe moral is a sex word, I am not surprised that they are willing to overlook things like building his career on fraud and routinely stiffing the people he has promised to pay. The amazing part is that his aura of success and willingness to express their shared hatreds more openly than most politicians do enables them to ignore the dirty sex stuff.
