Indeed, and he's providing us with a few pleasant surprises by being actually Christian in his scolding. Too bad he's not bucking all of the Church's less sensible traditions and viewpoints.

He's old... plus, gender is important, there's a lot of energy tied to it. I'm not sure that I could grow up in the 30s and 40s, and develop the mental flexibility to have better understanding.

(NB: Not excusing him or saying it's *okay*. Merely noting that "yeah, that's a flaw, but I see that flaw too close to myself to condemn *him* rather than the flaw. Um. And "condemn" is a pretty strong term too, maybe not the right term for this context.)
