When Tommie Smith & John Carlos did the Black Power thing at the 1968 Olympics, people said they were bringing politics into it. For the first time, I realized that it was already politics, in fact the essence of politics: the State taking something from the individual or group.

By now I’m used to that sort of thing, and this Olympics is showing us more individuals and groups acting admirably:

* The great Simone Biles knowing when to quit
* The women’s teams that don’t want to play in their panties
* Mutaz Essa Barshim and Gianmarco Tamberi sharing a gold medal, and thus giving whatever obscene gestures their nations favor to the idea that There’s Gotta Be One Winner.

If Al Davis were alive today, Colin Kaepernick would be a Raider. Like Leo Durocher, Davis believed that any time the other guys follow an “unwritten rule,” whether it’s against hiring people of the wrong race/sex/opinions or not spying on opponents, they’re handing you an edge.

Pursuant to an online suggestion, I am passing along the news that the U.S. won the World Soccer Championship. (I do not know or care who is the champ in men's soccer.) I suggest similar terminology for tennis, where only the female players are interesting.

I also note that the championship game had a nice baseball-like score, instead of living down to the old canard of being like Twilight. (They run around for two hours, nobody scores, and its billion fans insist you just don't understand.)

Once we appreciate that soccer is a sport where America's women are the stars and stop misnaming it after a more interesting sport,* we can find a place for it. (America was the only country that could crack down on FIFA, because if they threatened to take our "football" away, we'd laugh in their faces.)

*Not about gender. I prefer sports where we admit that we've evolved opposable thumbs.

Watching soccer is like waiting at a red light for an hour. Nothing is happening, but something could at any moment.
