Perhaps my favorite example of British understatement occurred when a People's Republic arrested a friend of George Orwell's for possession of ideas with intent to distribute. He commented, "There is no point in getting angry, but it is a stupid malignity that does try one's patience." Today my patience is tried by the
agent who told Sherwood Smith and Rachel Manija Brown that their post-apocalyptic YA series could probably sell if they'd just lose that gay character.
