60 years ago, one of the scary drugs that dope fiends abused was dexies, dextroamphetamine. Today we have Adderall, a medicine that doctors frequently prescribe for children and others with behavioral issues. That is also dextroamphetamine. Dr. Scott Alexander discusses.

50 years ago, crazy people said that the war for business supremacy would be between the speed freaks and the acid heads.

As predicted in The Space Merchants, Chinese restaurant owner puts poppies in his noodles in an effort to addict his customers. He was caught when a failed urine test led back to him, so I guess the war on some drugs is good for something.

Warning about Ambien, which doesn't even mention that it probably caused the suicides of Junior Seau and others.

Why your child needs amphetamine. Of course, lots of drugs have both therapeutic and recreational uses, but I don't think there are ads saying, "Does your child have aches & pains? Give him Oxycontin!"

Thinking about alcohol the way we're supposed to think about all the other drugs. And tobacco as addiction. (I never got high from it, kicked it 33 years ago, and now have no feelings about it except relief that I don't have to do it anymore.)

In its purest form, a newspaper consists of a collection of facts which, in controlled circumstances, can actively improve knowledge. Unfortunately, facts are expensive, so to save costs and drive up sales, unscrupulous dealers often "cut" the basic contents with cheaper material, such as wild opinion, bullshit, empty hysteria, reheated press releases, advertorial padding and photographs of Lady Gaga with her bum hanging out. The hapless user has little or no concept of the toxicity of the end product: they digest the contents in good faith, only to pay the price later when they find themselves raging incoherently in pubs, or – increasingly – on internet message boards
