I passed along (with mild disclaimer) the story about the OED editor dumping a bunch of foreign-origin words. It's wrong.

That's not how I read it. I read it as "I did write this but it's only a small part of my book and you've ignored what the Victorian editors did, which is the thing I consider most interesting about my book, and besides, he was a nice guy."

... I actually wasn't surprised to hear this; I seem to recall reading back in the 1970s or 1980s about them needing to make space for all the new words. Maybe I am misremembering; certainly there was a recent "Save a word from dictionary deletion by using it!" meme, and it was UK, not US. I suppose both could have been Chambers Dictionary, the crosswords one, rather than the OED.
