Santorum is wrong. The very purpose of conservatism is to empower an elite, so of course the elite will support it. One only has to glance at the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal to see this.
Santorum seems to be confusing religious, ethnic, and xenophobic populism with conservatism; he does not perceive that such things, and politicians like himself, are only tools in the service of conservatism, whose purpose is to defend and expand the power and privileges of international capital. Like all tools, he and his favorite causes are put aside when they are not needed.
