Yeah, I've only recently discovered how weird the Church is about the Spanish Civil War.

(Apparently the hierarchy was on the side of Franco and the lay members got caught in the crossfire. Everybody was one troop movement or one day from being caught in crossfire, from what I can tell. How anyone was left alive by 1939 is a mystery. Which leaves out the question of why they'd support Franco, but there is much about that conflict I don't get.)
