Why does the media always insist on pretending that modern conservatism has any serious policy designs? The last eight years and John McCain and Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh tell us all we need to know about the right’s intellect. They are for war for no good reason, covering up said war when it goes bad, torture, tax cuts for the wealthy, economic and educational disparity between the rich and poor, racial and sexual discrimination, immoral smearing of political opponents, speaking in the language of moral superiority while engaging in immoral personal behavior, neglect of government’s role as a watchdog and instead use it to enable corporate crime and the resulting economic malaise, and above all else the elevation of the intellectually uncurious over science and the advancement of knowledge–Oliver Willis

When being cynical, I suspect that the media are actually in favor of the "conservative" agenda. When not being cynical, I suspect the "Roman circuses keep them employed" theory of lack of insight (and besides, I can't remember the quote about being blind to what one's livelihood depends on being blind to). And it isn't everyone in the media, just as all conservatives are not "conservatives" in that sense; it's mostly the ones with seniority and "clout."

There is also the fact that most journalists, particularly the ones on television and radio and in the upper ranks on newspapers, are children of privilege. They attend J-schools; they have advanced degrees; their families are bankrolling them.

Damn, I miss Royko and Terkel, and I don't see enough Breslin out here.
