One suggested answer to the problem revealed by the Rodney King case is to ban civilian use of video cameras. What they are trying to ban has been described as obstruction of justice, cyberstalking, and wiretapping. Waiting until they've got the suspect inside the police station is not considered an acceptable solution.

Thanx to Dave Locke on trufen.

In the Bay Area, this is a very immediate issue right now. I was shocked to hear progressive co-workers saying that BART has a right to shut down the cellphone system, because a) BART put it in, and b) those eevil hackers responded badly to the shutdown.

I tried to make the point that a response to something, no matter how evil, doesn't make the initial act justifiable automatically.

I would have more sympathy with BART if it weren't a governmental organization. I have a very, *very* high standard for when the government gets to interfere in speech.

((Well. That, plus BART keeps being expleteively clueless about how to deal with PR nightmares, not to mention double-expletively incapable of *preventing them.* Which, y'know, would be a Good Plan.))
