There is much competition, but critics now generally agree that Norman Mailer's most embarrassing verbal production was "The White Negro," in which he wished that he too could be savage and violent like those cullid folk. I had thought that we have reached the point where at least one does not say that sort of thing openly in the public media. But over in the UK, one David Starkey has brought it back, though without the open envy. I'm not sure if that's progress.
