Let me clarify my terms here. The graduate students who taught me were not “casual” dressers. Casual, however relaxed it may appear, can be handsome and elegant. My teachers dressed at a level far below “casual.” Their style was careless, frumpy, and just plain hard to look at. I was sure my GPA suffered as a result.
No, your GPA suffered because you’re stupid enough to think like that.

Seriously.

And wasn’t this the real reason students didn’t respect the humanities — not because of the material seemed irrelevant but because the people teaching it looked like hopelessly irrelevant, misfit slobs?

I don't remember what any of my instructors wore in college, with the exception of Mr. Kahn, who disappeared toward the end of my first semester (beige wide-wale corduroy jackets with elbow patches, right out of the Stereotype Emporium). Including the ones I had late-onset crushes on.

I understand there are some people incapable of learning unless some hierarchic structure is clearly in place. I pity them.

Yes, that was quite a trip into How Other People Think. I would have severely disappointed him, in my Indian wrap skirts, white socks, sneakers, and plain-coloured T-shirts that didn't fit very well. On the other hand I was damned rarely late for class - excuse me, "time-challenged." And he's in a profession I loved, too - but very few people do, especially those who read the Wall Street Journal and daydream about funds requiring a $10 million down.

And did he have any science or math instructors at all??? All this stuff about the Humanities - but most of my colleagues in fields like English and Foreign Languages have dressed to impress in one way or another. While the overwhelming majority of my science professors dressed for convenience or to spare damage to their good clothes.

I smell a set of fibs. Which in some quarters is what "rhetoric" means.
