I'm truly surprised they and other newspapers still have anyone checking anything except facts. I know the local free daily, the Palo Alto Daily News, hired a proofreader a year or two ago after doing without since they started (and committing at least one sexy error on the front page), but had to lay them off immediately once they got sold to Knight Ridder and flipped to McClatchy. I had the impression the NY Times used nothing but spellcheck; in fact someone told me so, on one of the occasions when I was ranting about wanting to apply because every single issue would have a grammar, word choice, or spelling error on the front page. There are half a dozen people checking these things and that's a skeleton crew? Really? I'd be ashamed if I were one of them. I daresay you or I could proofread an issue in 2 or 3 hours and it would look significantly better.
