Jacques Berlinerblau writing about fewer Jews in Congress reminds me that most people don't know that there was an American political figure exactly as Jewish as Leopold Bloom: Barry Goldwater.

I have probably already quoted this to you, but ...

The late great Sam Levenson nailed this issue when he said, "Goldwater and I have one thing in common: we're both ashamed that he's Jewish."

I've been known to paraphrase this as "Joe Lieberman and I have nothing in common--he's not ashamed that he's Jewish."

I consider that unfair to Goldwater. It was his father who changed the name and the religion, and he never seemed ashamed of his background and to the best of my knowledge never did anything to conceal it.
