Heard about this through ontd_political on LJ, and yes, the only silver lining in this case was that the perpetrators, though purporting to identify themselves with the security of their community, were not actually cops.

Thank heaven it looks as though David Neiwert has not yet burned out of bearing witness to this sort of thing, because he seems to be the only one of note lately who does.
