At this point, the remaining thoughtful Republicans are probably wondering how to pull out of a death spiral that will end with the people who believe that Obama is a Muslim from Kenya being purged by the people who believe that Obama is a reptile from space. It would be nice if the Democrats could think of a way to take advantage of this situation.

Death spiral? If only.

Unfortunately, nuttery is all too viable politically these days. In my nightmare scenario, the teabaggers take control of Congress and effectively shut it down, leading to voter disillusionment with the political system that culminates in some general taking over, to the cheers of millions.
