theferrett opposes usernames. If I had one associated with attention whoring, refusing to use cut tags, and encouraging clueless boys to discuss boobs with women they don't know, I might feel likewise. I am fortunate enough not to need the relative anonymity a username provides, but I enjoy having one anyway.

Indeed. Quite aside from that, theferrett seems also to be forgetting that legal names aren't unique. Even if my "username" were first-name.middle-init.surname, I'd shut out at least one other person who uses the internet actively. (Historically, I seem to have spread myself across parts of the net I find interesting before this other person has had a chance to do so.)

Having spent some time arguing through the thread, his problem seems to be with _unique_ usernames on sites. i.e. that LJ can have only one person with a particular username, because this means that a person cannot use the same username, if they so wish, across the internet.

I have some sympathy with that idea - but he put it terribly badly.

*nods* I suppose that LJ could have unique IDs beneath non-unique usernames, but I notice that FB's customizable usernames are also unique. Why? URLs (e.g. to a particular user's profile) need to be unique; wishing can't change that.

As you say, he has put the idea (whichever one he had, exactly) terribly badly.

Also, I generally oppose LJ-cuts. I never use them myself, except when discussing spoilers.

I wish you (and everyone) would on wide pictures, but other than that, I am neutral, or at least would like "long things I am not interested in should be cut," which is not terribly implementable. If memory serves, his discussion was characteristic: "Mine is so big everyone should see it."

I think his, and my, reasoning is that "people don't click through lj-cuts" and "I want to be read". Which is somewhat equivalent to what you just said :->

I try to shrink large images (did that yesterday with a large graph that was annoying someone), but my general feeling with long things is that people can use the page-down button, as God intended :->

Yeah, that functionality is great. If LJ did that too, I'd be tempted to use lj-cuts.

He's awfully upset, but after reading his post and struggling through some of the ill-mannered retorts he gave to people (I got as far as the woodshed one and realized that seriously, life is just too short), I can't tell what he's actually upset about. I'm not sure he can either.

The problem isn't usernames, the problem is thinking you get to own a very short username on a very populated planet.

I am afraid to say I am enjoying some Schadenfreude that he bothered with DW too late to be one of the swaggering Cool Kids here. He blew his rep with me with the Boob Project (which was not about talking, it was about touching).

I continue to not read him.
