I knew a gymnast in elementary school. She was not utterly absorbed into the sport--she still went to public school throughout--but she definitely had serious trauma by high school.

The nieces did ballet for a while and, mindful of their mother's experience, we went for the best-rated dance school we could find with no competition and no pre-professional program.
