We live in the last days of the Roman Empire.

However, on the projection of a normalized appearance, see the YouTube shooter; IIRC comments from the hoi polloi immediately after the event were heavy on her strange appearance, and she appears to have curated her videos in accordance with an idiosyncratic definition of beauty. So there's one counter-example, and the flak I recall her getting for it, though one would have to seek out how she was viewed before she shot up a tech campus one lunchtime.
