I actually agree with their decision - if a person can't fit inside their own seat then it's incredibly unfair on the people next to them, who are stuck taking up 2/3 of a seat.

At that rate, though, Southwest is going to run out of people who can fly it. I'm far from the ends of that bell curve, and my butt fits in their seats snugly enough that I sometimes wonder if the seat will come with me when I stand up. Having looked at photos, I doubt that the man in question was endangering anybody -- and if Southwest is concerned about 'cramped, uncomfortable seating' I have a number of suggestions that don't involve requiring customers to purchase two seats -- but rather expect he just had the great misfortune to make someone *socially* uncomfortable.

Rather than casting stones at people on either end of the bell curve of sizes, I think it would make a lot more sense to suggest that airlines consider providing seats that will *comfortably* accomodate someone who is not a womens' size fourteen or smaller. --Oh, and on behalf of my friends of height? It would be awfully nice if someone who is more than 5'6" could sit comfortably, too. (I'm only 5'7", but a lot of that is leg, and flying Southwest is *not* comfortable. I've about given up on them unless their enough cheaper to pay me for my muscle cramps and headaches.)
