The Rude Pundit passes verbiage upon The New York Times, the newspaper that repeatedly publishes the likes of Ross Douthat in a doomed effort to make Our Mr. Brooks sound reasonable.

ETA: Charles Pierce joins the fun:
It’s obvious now that, in the deepest circles of wingnut rhetorical hell, “elites” has replaced even “liberal” as shorthand for “Everything I hate and fear. Ick. Cooties.”

The sarcastic, autistic, cynic in me agrees about Trump embodying family values. They are very old values, and even then some were mostly true only in legal minds.

Here they are.

  1. The paterfamilias owns all other members of the family. He's perfectly within his rights to put them to death, if their actions warrant it. Other forms of corporeal punishment are routine, and he'd be failing in his duty not to apply them. Depending on jurisdiction, he may or may not be permitted to sell his children into literal slavery. (See Roman law.)
  2. "Spare the rod and spoil the child" (It wouldn't be hard to find red tribers proudly espousing this today.)
  3. When a woman marries, she gives permanent consent to sex with her husband - any time, any place. There's no such thing as rape within marriage. (Laws of this nature existed into the 20th century in North America.)
  4. A man displays his virility and desirability by having sex with as many women as possible without marrying them. These should be of lower class than him, but anything else goes, including e.g. killing their family members if they object. In some subcultures, he may be encouraged to provide for the children, or even for the mistress. In some, providing for them would be considered absurd.
  5. If a woman has sex outside of marriage, it's reasonable for her husband or father to kill her. He may even have a duty to do so. It may also be reasonable to kill her paramour. It would be unreasonable to convict the killer in such a case. (No laws that I know of, but plenty of cultural and judicial precedent.)
  6. Members of sufficiently despised ethnicites should be taken from their parents and raised by people of preferred ethnicities, often in an institutional setting. This will "civilize" the children etc. Any incidental abuse of the children (rape, starvation, etc.) is not to be encouraged, but less important than the goal of civilizing them. (Canada's residential schools; Canada's adoption policies in living memory. Australia's schools. Some similar US behaviour.)
  7. "All's fair in love and war" - with "love" translated as "when a man wants to have sex with a woman". (No laws here, just culture.)

Yeah, these are definitely Republican family values in general and Trump's in particular.
