I hate this, but I also have never really understood it. As a social phenomenon, I always tend to think of it as a high school thing, and it amazes me to hear that adults still engage in this behaviour. But furthermore, the people I'm involved with, either dating or having sex with or both, are hot -- desirable (pretty much by definition, since I desire them). Why wouldn't I be proud to be seen with them on my arm? Even if I thought of a partner as a status marker, being with one I find incredibly beautiful should be a giant score in my favour. I love being seen with my partners because I imagine that they make me look good and that other people are impressed an envious -- and why not? I certainly would be.

I don't quite get it either, and it's a bit scary how some people see sex as "scoring" (as in points) rather than happymaking pleasure. It's even scarier when you consider people for whom this is a *terrible* deal (they'll be perpetual losers in all senses of the word) nevertheless embracing that paradigm. "Let's see, have sex because it's fun and happy and loving; or lust after unattainable women because I've got perverse ideas that it's the natural order of things, and be miserable. Well, god, what kind of loser would pick the *former*?"
