The sample question is not really a matter of comprehension, making me suspect both pieces of research may describe poorly what they set out to analyze. (Taking "genre fiction" broadly—someone mentioned superheroes—a significant number of readers flee from school analysis into things where it isn't required, so "easier" may well be a compliment in some cases.) And "airlock" and "aliens" are poor markers for SF. Probably the experiment trawled up some people with bad experiences with science education, or simply who don't expect to be required to empathize with characters in "hard" SF. (The latter seems to me to be a popular attitude among SF fans.) Anyway ... I suppose tit required tat.
This reminds me of when a reviewer began a review of one of my favorite movie musicals by saying they didn't like musicals, then went on to pan the movie. Being able to analyze something not to one's personal taste is a sadly rare skill.
