Today marks 19 years without drugs.

I'm one of those awful American males who don't want the real world getting in the way when the NFL is on the tube. When Pope John Paul I was poisoned died suddenly after deciding to investigate the Vatican Bank, his funeral preempted the NFL. The announcer said that watching the funeral, even on TV, gave the viewer one indulgence. However, I figured that wishing they'd get the goddam thing over with so I could watch the game was a mortal sin, so it was a wash.

Yesterday the reading of the 9/11 names on CBS ran into the time for scheduled football, but there was also a game on Fox, so I merely had to wait a bit to switch back & forth during commercials. [livejournal.com profile] drcpunk watched the 9/11 ceremony on purpose, and today she said that the only bad thing was the way CBS kept doing voiceovers to apologize that the reading was running longer than expected. I guess for once I'm in a popular demographic.

It's Speak Out With Your Geek Out Week-- time to proclaim your weird, excessive interests. Me, I'm primarily an epigram-&-reference geek, with math & pro football as lesser geekeries.

Perhaps my favorite example of British understatement occurred when a People's Republic arrested a friend of George Orwell's for possession of ideas with intent to distribute. He commented, "There is no point in getting angry, but it is a stupid malignity that does try one's patience." Today my patience is tried by the agent who told Sherwood Smith and Rachel Manija Brown that their post-apocalyptic YA series could probably sell if they'd just lose that gay character.

Thanx to [livejournal.com profile] sartorias et al.
