Stories need conflict

"Progress" isn't necessarily good, but it's true you can't explore such conflicts effectively by taking a phobic approach. Change always has its pros and cons, we've just got to figure out when which is weightier.

I wonder why she found Gattaca ridiculous?

That's a good point. Too much Star Trek would get flat. (Don't get me wrong, I love me some "humans will mature" stories. But, yeah, "they lived happily ever after" is a story's *end* for a reason!)
