Wondering if a fine formula would help: first fines for verbal abuse are small, but the more shit you shovel out, the more expensive it gets. Would that help illustrate the progress from first-amendment freedoms to "no, really, just shut up now"? Especially if the curve is a parabola or hypotenuse.
