Well... I'm going to push back, gently, on that. He could have avoided it if he'd *talked* to women on the subject (with a neutral opening) and listened.
The reason it's "culture" is that it's water to a fish, and until a fish goes to the surface, and realizes "holy carp[sic], there's something else!" they can't even think about it. That's why I like the expression "consciousness raising" - making things more conscious, giving you more to think about.
That makes me wonder - what does that mean, a progressive high school? A school where students are taught to think for themselves? All high schools have that as part of their mission. It sounds like a particularly empty phrase if the school has had pervasive groping and hair pulling in the hallways, possibly worse, and if a respected teacher there can be clueless enough to share such an essay with readers who are, after all, juveniles he has power over.
It means it's a high school in one of the richer neighborhoods. It's maybe number two in the district for brains (i.e., students who have great grades, high scores, and desirable college acceptances). It's easily the most upper middle class school-a former boss of mine bought a condo in the catchment zone for that school so her kid could go there (she couldn't afford a house in that neighborhood, not even if she sold hers--which is in a lower middle class neighborhood). It's about 2 miles from where I sit in my apartment. I mean, all of Portland is pretty progressive! It's hardly a useful qualifier!
But there are jerk teachers in most schools--I know, I used to work for one of the law offices that represents the teachers' union. I've said for years that had I known what shenanigans teachers get away with before my kids started school, I'd have home-schooled my kids.
