Jimmy Breslin (1928-2017). I didn’t like him all the time, but he had the heart and he had the words, and when they worked together, he was great. (I have just learned that he called Rudy Giuliani “a short man in search of a balcony.”)

Seriously. I stopped reading his column around 10 years ago, but before that the ratio of riveting to ho-hum had been pretty good. And of course, he introduced me to the Mets (I had just returned from Europe that year so had only hazy clue). If anyone (outside of Lower Manhattanite) was going to say that about Giuliani, it had to be Breslin.
