I don’t know if the Russians seriously meddled in the late election, but it does seem likely that Mitch McConnell didn’t want us to know and said that the CIA was trying to illegitimately influence voting which is the FBI’s job when they investigated it.

Sublimating mere national security to electoral triumph is not something new for the Republicans. Nixon did it in 1968 when he meddled in the Vietnam peace talks, and Reagan did it in 1980 when he didn’t want the hostages to be released until he could claim credit. To be fair, though, the Republicans don’t do this sort of probably-not-technically-treason only to win elections. Remember the Dubya Gang outing a CIA agent to support their lies about meddling in Iraq?

It is a sign of decline in an institution when its members begin to value their immediate political objectives above the rules under which the institution is constituted.

The United States is looking more and more like an empire in decline.
