Wright Patman was a fairly typical Southern populist: He supported segregation and any war the generals wanted to wage and opposed the bankers. (Unlike many of them, he may have admitted that some of the bankers were Gentiles.) The idealistic Democrats swept into power in 1974 by Watergate dumped him from his committee chairmanship. That appears to have been a step too far.
