Here is a Republican strategist saying, “Trump can’t just lose; he must be humiliated.” I’m down with that. In fact, I’d like to see not only a major repudiation by the American people but also enough revelations about the real state of his finances that everyone will know that he is not the successful business genius that he plays on television, but rather an example of how the game is so fixed that someone who starts out rich enough will make at least modest profits no matter how mean and incompetent he is.

The strategist believes that a strong enough defeat for Trump will purge the Republican Party of the hatreds he feeds. But without those hatreds, the Republican Party is libertarianism without the fun parts, and that’s not going to win you a lot of elections.
