I suppose it's sort of sad, that I'm commenting on this via Dreamwidth, but I think DW carries on the feeling of LJ. I joined LJ fairly late in the game, in 2006, and I was ages older than a lot of the folks who commented on the piece to which you linked. But I do understand the feelings that she talked about. This type of platform works really well for me, and I've developed a group of friends whose presence I enjoy immensely.
