It's irrefutable. I am informed that the Liberal Establishment wants Roman Polanski released. But everyone on my Friends List who has discussed it pretty much agrees with me: Roman Polanski raped a 13-year-old and should be treated accordingly. In fact, it would appear that in this case, the Liberal Establishment is a few showbiz people who have found ways to argue that their crony and colleague is a Special Case, which is unpleasant in a case this nasty, but hardly a cause for shock.

Well.....on the other hand, the child he raped is now 44 and would rather just let the whole thing rest. Apparently she'd rather move on, and I for one think she has that right...


ETA I'm not saying he shouldn't be held accountable - I just wish there were a way to do that without dragging her back into the glare of publicity again...

It's a justice system (well, when it's working,) not a "do you want vengeance?" system.

I had something similar, albeit less pithy, to say about this last night. I guess I'm not shocked, but I am hurt; these directors and actors are mostly pretty high-caliber artists, ones who try to address the human condition in their work, to show the dignity of all human beings. Come to find out that girls don't actually have "human dignity," at least not when it means one of their own number is threatened with the consequences of his actions. For shame. Cronyism and entitlement: yes.

The sole moment of comedy for me was seeing Woody Allen's name on the list. That was so expected, so typical on so many levels (both the "I like to molest teens!" level and the "Artists are special snowflakes!" level, at any rate) that I just had to sit there and laugh.
