But as the concluding paragraphs say, they only noted the effect in the case of children spanked "regularly"--it says at one point 3 times a week. Surely that's hardly the norm? THe whole point of spanking is not to have the child in constant terror but to have it be the ultimate punishment that happens only occasionally. They studied the effects of beating and like a lot of people who were spanked, I have a lot invested in not running the 2 together, which the headline is going to encourage.
They also mention a five point difference - this is hardly a significant statistical difference, since the same person testing on different occasions would probably vary more than that.
While I certainly agree that hitting kids is not going to make them smarter, I don't think this research goes very far towards proving it.
