I am prepared for the disappointment of learning that the official pope really is resigning because of age and infirmity rather than dead nun/live choirboy/RICO indictment.

Dead nuns and Jesuits happened in Central America back in the '80s, we all know about the live choirboys (although perhaps not the fullness of Benny the Rat's involvement), so maybe it's a RICO indictment.

Loved that alternative scenario, if that had actually happened, this lapsed Catholic would say that the Holy Spirit was indeed at work.
