As someone who reads a lot of Chandler--over and over again--I have to wonder if he's read James M. Cain or Jim Thompson. Although the "don't criticize this thing because that thing is worse" argument is actually a pretty poor argument, and the misogyny in Chandler is sneakier and thus needs more attention, but dang.
