And given the case of the evangelical Christian who thought the Mars Exploration Rover's price tag cost half the DOD's budget (see http://amyshirateitel.com/2012/09/28/the-cost-of-curiosity/) I am not surprised.

I don't know if this is plain stupidity about numbers, the willingness to believe anything that justifies "Team Left Behind," or as TNH said, "deceiving the electorate has become an industrial process."
