Invisible disability

I have two tiny Caucasian-colored devices that I wear in my ears to raise my hearing level to Moderately Challenged. They are marvels of miniaturization and are priced like that. I believe there are better ones in the price range for people who keep their money in the Cayman Islands.

Suppose they didn’t have to be miniature. Suppose they were permitted to cover the entire ears and surrounding territory. One assumes they could then be better and cheaper. So why not?

We are ashamed of disabilities. Hearing loss is not usually acquired venereally, but the stigma is there. People would know!!! Of course in my case they could find out by speaking softly. And the perceptive ones would adjust.

I’m a nerd; I would cheerfully sacrifice appearance to function, and I would love hearing aids that did that. And I’d get them in bright colors.

Your point about the shame over disability is a good one and I like how some people with loss of limbs are able to fight it with artistically designed prosthetics. Again, to get the one you want, that money in the Caymans is definitely an advantage.

I know if I needed hearing aids though, I'd prefer small because I don't like my ears being hot--and it would be especially miserable for me in summer. More weight on the ears would also definitely be uncomfortable.

But if you'd like them in bright colors, then appearance definitely does matter to you, just not having to follow someone else's dictates on style, right? However, if I were skilled at plastics, I'd make you some magenta hearing aid covers with plastic or enamel coyotes anchoring them over the ears. I could draw what I'm thinking of, my friend, but someone else would have to make them for you.
