Phobes

[livejournal.com profile] nellorat ran afoul of one of those tiresome sorts who insist on repeatedly passing verbiage upon anyone who says a good word for religion. When she posted about him, she called him an atheist, but I considered that unfair to the many atheists who mind their own business, so I suggested the term theophobe.

I thought about that a bit more. As we all know, many homophobes (though probably not all) are seriously tempted by what they condemn, and every few months there's a news story about one of them giving in. Theophobia generally doesn't work like that, but wouldn't it be a hoot if someone like Richard Dawkins were photographed sneaking into a high mass?

I don't recall where George Orwell referred to one kind of atheist as -"Seeming not so much to disbelieve in God as to have a personal dislike of Him."-

Tangent: I think we need a term for people who believe in God but oppose him/her/__ -- without being Satanists.

And another term for people who can't be called anarchists because they don't believe government exists.
