Peter J. Gomes

I first encountered Rev. Gomes in Stephen Fry's book about his travels in America. Fry was obviously captivated by the flamboyant Harvard professor and communicated the feeling to me. As Fry put it, "You're obviously gay, but many people don't know that you are also openly black." He died the other day.

Professor Gomes was my former wife's freshman adviser. He was also perhaps the best orator I have ever heard. His services at Memorial Church were regularly broadcast on WHRB, a radio station to which I've been connected in one form or another for 36 years. I particularly remember a kick-ass anti-war sermon he gave in October, 2002, a few months before Bush's ill starred invasion of Iraq.

Professor Gomes will be sorely missed.
