Fanniversary
Today is a personal holiday. Having discovered in 1972 that sf fandom might be the refuge from propriety and social standards that I had been seeking all my life, I spent portions of the next five years cautiously investigating, beginning to participate, and mainly getting up my courage. Fandom certainly seemed to be a place where I could open my virtual raincoat and display my mind without fear of arrest or even being told that I had a small ugly one. I even imagined it leading to having many interesting friends, getting laid, and maybe even finding true love. I didn't consciously pick 5/5/77 as an auspicious date, but it was then that the pressure to find out got to be too much, so I typed up 10 pages of weirdness and took them to be photocopied. Any fear that my writing might be too offensive for the copy center ended when I noticed that the person on line ahead of me was printing thorough descriptions of XXX movies with all-male casts. I got 125 copies of The Diagonal Relationship 1 and sent them to faneds and letterhacks and even a few pros before sanity could intervene. It worked.
