Sympathy for the Capitalist Devil

Disney vs DeSantis is reminding us that capitalists do not engage in the disinterred pursuit of pure evil but often protect us from worse entities.

Corporations are staying away from states that will not allow valued employees abortions or same-sex marriages.

Those who fling enough feces in all directions long enough eventually hit something rich and lawyered up. Fox News has encountered not one but two of those, and perhaps the first softened them up and the second will apply the coup de grace.

That judge who ruled that the FDA made a legal error in not considering Ritually Unclean as sufficient reason to ban a product has aroused the ire of Big Pharma.

Yep. An excellent current practical example of the difference between being amoral (which corporations should be) and immoral.

I am experiencing some cognitive dissonance trying to absorb the idea of Disney as a valiant warrior for tolerance and social justice. It's not so much that I think Capitalism is Evil, it's that during my formative years Walt Disney presented as sort of a Nazi. During the 60's, Walt declared war on hippies, refusing to hire anybody with even a smidgen of facial hair (despite his own iconic 'stache) and reportedly turning away Disneyland customers who looked remotely countercultural. Of course, Walt is long dead and his personal vendettas have been discarded in favor of simply selling product to the largest possible audience, but it still seems strange. Of course that doesn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying the confrontation, and applauding every time Disney scores another point against DeSantis.

Walt was convinced that anyone to the left of him had been co-opted by the Communists. That was the lesson he derived from the big animators' strike.

The enemy of my enemy is not always my friend. They will, at least, be useful in moments and contexts such as these. Friendship, if it can be had in good conscience, will be a bonus.
