Too simple. The UK got the modernity memo he describes and then rejected it, because they don’t want to extend that social safety net to immigrants, especially people of color.

And that problem is festering across all of Europe and undoing the social safety nets little by little. Because the problem with modernity is like all liberal values, it was formulated for white men only. Add in everyone else and tribalism ensues because the white men don’t want to extend it to others and many white women are right there with them.

And somehow we’re going to have to solve this globally, not just on this or that side of the Atlantic because the people on top who won’t share are mobile with fortress palaces everywhere they choose, and as long as they are hogging resources, we will have poverty worldwide. As with climate change, we are all in this together across the globe.
