I often wanted someone to novelize Frank Herbert

Good thought from [livejournal.com profile] bookslut:
Sometimes when an author comes up with a really great idea, and with it creates a monster of disappointment and despair, destroying every good thing that could have been, I wish it was okay for another author to do a cover version. Like all those Leonard Cohen songs… which are always so much better when someone else sings them. Poor, poor book idea, you just presented yourself to the wrong damn writer.
My nominee for #1 book of that sort is The Alphabet vs. the Goddess, by Leonard Shlain. It's a really important idea, totally destroyed by great gobs of gender essentialism (men are verbal and violent; women are neither).

God, yes. A co-worker showed me that book in the mistaken belief that I'd tell her, "No, please don't withdraw that!" and I was all, "Here, give me the Discard stamp, I wanna kill that demon myself."
