Before The Underground Railroad, Colson Whitehead wrote the remarkable sf/alternate history/unclassifiable The Intuitionist.

Thanx to Tor.com.

I have mixed feelings about The Underground Railroad.

The book? May I ask? (it's on my to-read list.)

yeah, this book. There are very realistic elements, especially a long ways at the beginning, and then there are non-realistic elements introduced and I found it jarring and confusing and I could not reenter the world/trust the author after that point.

So, basically, the way the non-realistic elements were introduced broke your suspension of disbelief? Thank you very much for telling me.

The non-realistic elements are a fantastical narrative device that allow a wider tour of horrors, but they would not entirely make sense in any world otherwise similar to ours. My experience differed from ruthling: once I understood that, I trusted that the metaphor would carry me along.
