yeah, this book. There are very realistic elements, especially a long ways at the beginning, and then there are non-realistic elements introduced and I found it jarring and confusing and I could not reenter the world/trust the author after that point.
The non-realistic elements are a fantastical narrative device that allow a wider tour of horrors, but they would not entirely make sense in any world otherwise similar to ours. My experience differed from ruthling: once I understood that, I trusted that the metaphor would carry me along.
