I read this to BB, and he agreed. I think an additional factor is even simpler than the theory put forth here; in the city, you're not as apt to meet people you know in your day to day travels, and if you don't have the experience of speaking to strangers as a kid, or watching your family members do so, you're not going to assay it as an adult.
Yes. And the "Don't meet people's eyes on the subway, they have little enough privacy" thing needs explaining too; I remember explaining just that on LJ years ago to someone who'd moved to NYC.
