I noticed in grade school that the reflexive pronoun used for one species was the opposite of the one used for the one you owned. I.e., you owned a male dog, all cats were she, if you owned a female dog, all cats were he. The only kids who used the correct pronouns were the ones who had both a cat and a dog of the same sex.
