Against a Federal Registry of Genitals

It is of course common sense that humanity is divided into men and women, and you can tell which someone is by looking, just as it is common sense that the Sun goes around the Earth. The Trump Gang, unsurprisingly, is promoting this cruel and stupid doctrine. [Atlantic]

Also common sense that it is anyone's business but the person's. I understand the UK wanting doctors to know which people need pap smears and which people don't. Apart from that I don't see why anyone gets an opinion on someone else's gender. If we could remove it entirely from government documents, that would be okay by me.

Given UK law, all that stuff has been removed from my medical records on my request so I do get all the obvious shout outs being a woman of a certain age, but it's the work of moment to cancel the unnecessary ones. :o)

I think the concern in the UK is that a man with a vagina might not get the reminders for a pap smear, since there's no record of his vagina anywhere. WThe good of the law might outweigh the harms here - I can't speak to that. It's the only reason can see that even might be valid to record someones genitals rather than their gender.

It is the eternal problem of having to out onesself to medical 'experts' to get relevant treatment- a lot of people wish trans guys away even more than they wish trans girls away.

And as for intersex conditions (raises hand tentatively) forget it............

I have a really common mental illness, and I still spend far too much time explaining to GPs how to treat me. I can only imagine how frustrating it is for something less common and with more discrimination.

Ideally, government wouldn't record gender at all, since it's not really relevant to anything they do. But I'm not holding my breath.
