I think it's more about class than fear. Cream and taupe, and charcoal suits for men (or dark blue in the US) are modern signifiers of sophistication (as the author keeps mentioning).
Fun thing to do at your next party: break out your old paints and brushes and let people doodle on a canvas. It's something people can do while conversing and it takes the pressure off of folks who avoid eye contact. And you get a free painting out of it.
